At Kajans, arts and culture are powerful tools for learning, expression and connection. Our programmes celebrate African and Caribbean heritage, amplify under-represented voices and create spaces where people of all ages can discover, participate and belong.
From Caribbean history and culture in schools to performances at Birmingham Town Hall, the Crescent Theatre and Symphony Hall, we connect local creativity with major cultural platforms. Through Culture on Your Doorstep, we also bring exhibitions, storytelling and artist residencies directly into neighbourhoods.
Kajans partnered with Worcester Dance to present an ambitious UK programme featuring the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC). Workshops and performances brought Caribbean dance, music and storytelling to schools, arts centres and audiences across major UK cities.
Our collaboration with NDTC’s founding Artistic Director, Professor Rex Nettleford, helped shape Kajans’ early dance and music work. His mentorship supported an international network of artists and connected Birmingham’s cultural development to a wider global movement.
African Mama is Kajans’ flagship celebration of the strength, resilience and creativity of African and African-diaspora women. Delivered in neighbourhood settings, it creates welcoming spaces where women can reconnect with heritage, explore identity and share lived experience.
Through storytelling, drumming, song, movement, food traditions and mentoring, African Mama brings generations together. Personal stories become pathways to wellbeing, confidence, leadership and enterprise—strengthening the relationships that help communities thrive.
Love & Marriage is a cultural programme exploring love, commitment and identity in modern multicultural Britain. Through performance, workshops and intergenerational dialogue, it invites people to reflect on the rituals, values, joys and humour that shape relationships.
Inspired by stories from Birmingham families, the project celebrates both tradition and change. Storytelling, music, movement and performance create a joyful space to connect across cultures and generations.
