About Kajans

Kajans Women's Enterprise Ltd is a Birmingham-based charity that empowers people to transform their communities. Guided by justice, equity and sustainability, we create opportunities for individuals to thrive personally, socially and economically.

Get involved

Our work spans education, culture, enterprise, community housing and inclusive spaces. We take an asset-based approach: recognising the knowledge, talent and potential already present in local communities, then helping people turn those strengths into lasting change.

Our mission

To empower individuals to transform communities through arts and culture, education and training, social enterprise development and affordable community housing.

Our story

Kajans was founded in Birmingham in April 2004 by minority ethnic women who shared a belief that meaningful change begins within communities. What started as a grassroots movement supporting personal development and resilience has grown into an organisation advancing social justice, lifelong learning and sustainable regeneration.

From skills programmes and international cultural experiences to supported housing and community-owned developments, Kajans remains true to its founding principle: when individuals are empowered, whole communities flourish.

Our values

Justice & Equity
We challenge inequality and work to ensure fair access to opportunity, dignity and respect.

Empowerment
We nurture confidence, skills and leadership so people can shape their own lives and communities.

Sustainability
We build resilient systems and places that serve present and future generations.

Diversity & Respect
We celebrate Birmingham’s diversity as a source of knowledge, creativity and strength.

Local Leadership & Good Governance
We combine community insight with accountable, ethical and strategic leadership.

Collaboration & Integrity
We build trust, share responsibility and work with others to achieve lasting impact.

Ubuntu
Our vision is rooted in ubuntu: a belief in our shared humanity and in the idea that each of us becomes stronger through our relationships with others. It is a principle lived by our staff, volunteers and partners as we work together for a fairer society.

What they say about us

“Kajans embodied the very best of Birmingham’s spirit during the pandemic: kindness, resilience and unwavering service. The team worked tirelessly to prepare and deliver hot meals to older people, isolated residents and vulnerable families, often going far beyond what was expected.”

Cllr Mohammed Azim – Former Lord Mayor of Birmingham

“Kajans creates a welcoming environment in which women can build confidence, develop skills and overcome barriers. Its commitment to opportunity, wellbeing and community makes a lasting difference.”

Dean Gordon – Media Beast

“For more than 20 years, Kajans has expanded opportunity across North and North West Birmingham through education, enterprise, housing support and cultural development. Its community-led approach builds sustainable pathways for today while laying strong foundations for future generations.”
